Stockport

Vision for Stockport

Stockport is an ambitious place undergoing a spectacular transformation. By working closely with our communities and partners, we’ve already created some brilliant opportunities for residents, businesses and visitors – and there’s more to come.

Our ‘One Stockport, One Future’ borough plan sets out how we’ll continue working in partnership to make Stockport the best place for people to live happy and healthy lives; a place that everyone, right across the borough can be proud of.

To achieve this shared vision, we must have a relentless focus on the biggest challenges facing our borough:

  • Fair and inclusive – making Stockport a great, diverse place to live, where everyone can thrive
  • Climate Action Now – creating a ‘green print’ for Stockport so it is a climate friendly place to live, work, play and invest.

Priorities for Stockport

One Stockport, One Future also sets out the five ‘big things’ that we believe will act as long-term catalysts of change over the next 15 years:

  1. Good Jobs and homes
  2. Best place to grow up
  3. Best health and care
  4. Thriving neighbourhoods
  5. Clean and green transport

The five big things don’t cover all the work we do together. They are things that we believe, if we achieve them, will positively impact many other areas, making Stockport one of the best places in the country to live a happy and healthy life.

Growth plans for Stockport

Six growth locations have been identified across Greater Manchester as part of our integrated pipeline for growth. Each growth location has a distinct focus and relates to specific local areas.

Growth locations linked to Stockport

  • Airport and Southern Growth Corridor: Plans for the Airport and Southern Growth Corridor capitalise on the international connectivity of Manchester Airport, where MIX Manchester is creating opportunities to grow Life Sciences and Tech sectors, and driving the transformation of town centres like Stockport and Wythenshawe

Commitments for Stockport

Commitment 1

We will expand Stockport MDC to the Town Centre East, delivering 8,000 new homes, thousands of new jobs, and securing further national investment. We will bring Metrolink to Stockport, invest in Stockport railway station and open a new station in Cheadle. All improving connectivity into and across our borough. We will also make walking, cycling and public transport more accessible for residents, all of which will improve congestion on our roads.

Commitment 2

We will have excellent inclusive schools right across the borough, including a new town centre inclusive school, which support all children to achieve their potential.

Commitment 3

We will deliver a new hospital and neighbourhood health centre in the town centre, to complement Stepping Hill hospital, that will improve access and service delivery across the Borough.

Alongside this and our education, regeneration and transport commitments we will be delivering Stockport Live Well. By focusing on the strengths and needs of different areas and redesigning the way we work with people in our communities we will create happy and healthy lives for everyone across Stockport.

"There are nice, friendly people round here, here to help us out."
