Western Gateway

The Western Gateway is a key development for Greater Manchester, developing our connections with the Port of Liverpool, and the rest of the world. The Western Gateway is located to the west of the city centre, the area surrounding the Manchester Ship Canal. It stretches from New Carrington through Port Salford and towards Old Trafford and Media City.

Western Gateway presents a strategic opportunity to undertake a transformative programme of employment space, housing, and culturally-led regeneration that can deliver a significant contribution to regional and national economic growth and social outcomes.

The Western Gateway has the potential to create new jobs, capitalising on the unrivalled connectivity and planned employment space at New Carrington, Port Salford, Partington, and Trafford Park, alongside the regional leisure, retail and hospitality destination at Trafford City. Logistics and distribution sector employment will be created, with opportunities accessible to local communities with existing skills in this sector and further opportunities for development.

Employment growth will also be created in the low carbon energy sector, linked to the development of a low carbon energy innovation park at Trafford Park, complemented by the HYNET low carbon hydrogen network which is proposed to connect to Greater Manchester through the Western Gateway.

The continued development of Port Salford will provide a tri-modal sustainable freight transport hub, essential logistics space and capacity for the growing city and frontier sectors.

The Old Trafford Regeneration area offers a unique opportunity to deliver one of the largest investment and regeneration projects in Europe and will deliver a step change in economic performance and quality of life for the area and beyond.

Delivery of the aims of the strategically important Trafford Wharfside Development Framework will deliver a dynamic and ultra-connected network of communities where all amenities, landmarks and public spaces are easily accessed within a 5 minute walk.

Significant brownfield sites will also be utilised for the creation of new high-quality homes, bringing forward new sustainable integrated urban neighbourhoods. These new settlements will provide enhanced connectivity to ensure residents have access to key employment opportunities.

In order to deliver the potential scale of development, it is essential that we deliver the necessary transport improvements and enhanced connectivity required to support the opportunities, including Port Salford/ Trafford Waters, Carrington Regeneration Route and the Port Salford Freight Link. Committing to deliver these transport interventions is crucial to unlocking sustained economic growth in the region. We will also develop the case for the expansion of the Trafford Park Metrolink route towards Port Salford.
